Assortment of doTERA oils.

doTERRA Essential Oils

Additional Information

Essential oils can be helpful in your healing of mental illnesses and general well being. However, they should be discussed with your provider to ensure proper use. Some oils can interact with traditional medications. You should discuss this with your provider for your safety.

Diffusing oils can be beneficial but they may also be harmful. By using a water diffuser, the oils combine with large droplets and enter the air. For individuals with respiratory illnesses, these water droplets may be absorbed into the lungs along with the oils, which could then coat the lungs. Applying a few drops to a cold light bulb or through diffusing sticks or on a pillow or bedding, is different than using the humidifying diffusers. When oils are applied this way, the oil droplets stay on the surface and the scent enters the room. The nose filters out the larger droplets and they are not breathed in the same way. Children, elderly, and those with respiratory complications may be negatively affected by the humidified diffusers but may tolerate the dry diffusion.

Although some individuals use oils on their pets, caution should be taken and this should be discussed with your veterinarian before use. Oils should not be applied to cats and very limited use on dogs. Cats are very sensitive to essential oils, and may not be able to tolerate the diffusing in a room. If a dog ingests the oils, it could cause gastrointestinal upset.

Ingestion of oils should be done with caution. For instance, eucalyptus can be soothing, but if ingested could cause seizures.  Ingesting Lavender can interfere with your body's natural production of hormones, even in children.
